Chapter 21

Nick, Seo-ah, Spencer, Adele, Reggie, and Maria sat around in Nick’s room, studying the plans for the upcoming conflict, and double-checking everything.

“Alright. I’m almost done with all the potions for the upcoming raid,” Topaz said as she entered the room, taking a bag off her shoulder and plopping it down on the table as she herself collapsed onto a chair. “You have no idea how tough it was to craft this many potions. That was not a fair number. At this rate, I might as well give up dungeon diving entirely and just spend my life wasting away in the lab to finish potions.”

“But those aren’t for the raid though,” Nick replied as he looked over at the bag, raising an eyebrow. He wasn’t the only one.

“They’re not in there, and also, where’s Allen? Does he not get an invite when you guys throw your magic-learning parties?”

“He gets one. He just doesn’t show,” Nick corrected her.

“Yeah, what did he say last time? ‘What’s the point of spending magic on a spell when I can use it to power a device instead?’” Adele said, giving her best Allen impersonation as she stuck out her chest and pushed imaginary glasses up her nose, adding a weird posture to go with a rather accurate verbal imitation.

“Whoa, you have his voice down pat,” Maria remarked as she put down the notes she was holding and joined the conversation.

“Thanks. I can do other people too,” Adele replied. “Like, this is my Nick impersonation: ‘You guys need to stop goofing off and get back to work. If you don’t prepare now, you’ll pay for it later!’”

Maria looked even more impressed. “Wow . . .”

“That . . . That sounded nothing like me!” Nick protested.

“Are you sure about that?” Adele asked, a mischievous grin on her face as she turned to Seo-ah. “Did it really sound nothing like him?”

“It was so spot on I now kind of want to get you to help me make a ridiculous voicemail message with things he’d never say,” Seo-ah admitted.

“Not that accurate,” Reggie disagreed. “Nick’s voice is a good two notes deeper, but other than that, quite perfect. You just need to use one of those modulators when you do the recording.”

“Wait, wait, wait, what did you mean, those potions weren’t for the raid?” Topaz asked, stopping the goofy conversation as she took a chocolate energy bar off the table and bit into it. “You put a rush order on hundreds of potions! I thought it must have been for that sky raid thingy you all are planning to do.”

“No, that’s . . . That’s a different beast entirely.” Nick sighed. “I’m honestly a little nervous about the raid.”

“What do you mean?” Topaz asked. “You have the Walters, and you have the whole former crew of the Abyssal Knights, and you have a few other ace members too . . . and they were all great before you forced them to do training ten times more than before and decked them out with better items.
